HEAD START PROGRAM

The mission of Head Start as a federally mandated program created in 1965, is to ensure comprehensive developmental services to America’s low-income preschool children (ages three to five). In addition Head Start staff and parents must become partners to identify family goals and strengths in order to access the necessary services and supports in the community. Specific services for children focus on education, social-emotional development, physical and mental heal, and nutrition including children with disabilities.

The APIA Head Start program provides a half-day program which operates September thru May, and is designed to support children’s physical, intellectual and social growth. Currently, we have center-based programs at Sand Point, St. Paul, Unalaska and King Cove, which collectively provide education, special needs, mental health, nutrition, and social services to a maximum of 72 children of preschool, ages 3 - 5, and their low-income families.

Parents are encouraged to become involved in all aspects of the program, and are provided with education, information and referrals to assist them in reaching their goals.
Although preference is given to low-income and Alaska Native families, all children who meet eligibility requirements are considered on a space-available basis. Head Start ensures that all families receive the services of Education, Special Needs, Mental Health, Nutrition, and Social Services.

To establish a Head Start Program, the community must have at least 12 children between ages of 3-5 for a Home-based program; or, 13 children for a Center-based program option.

For further specific information contact Cameron Foster at 1-800-478-2742 or email cammief@apiai.org.

To apply refer to the enrollment application and APIA's Physical Exam Form. Before a child's first day of school they must have completed a physical exam. Please use this exam form which includes all "Federally Mandated Health Requirements."
